Esta banda surgiu na Alemanha na década de 80 com o nome de Lucifer's Heritage com Hansi Kürsch (vocal e baixo), André Olbrich, Marcus Siepen (Guitarras) e Thomas Stauch (bateria). Após algumas demos com este nome a banda mudou para Blind Guardian. Podemos dizer que esta é uma das primeiras bandas de power metal do mundo. Porém, é importante ressaltar que a banda não ficou presa neste estilo, criando uma sonoridade própria, inspirada na cultura medieval e na obra de J.R.R. Tolkien. Após fazer sucesso no cenário underground alemão a banda assinou com a gravadora No Remorse Records em 1988, para produzir Battalions Of Fear, que já havia sido gravado como álbum da banda Lucifer's Heritage. Este álbum teve excelente aceitação em toda a Alemanha. Em seguida a banda voltou ao estúdio para gravar Follow The Blind. Para este trabalho e também nos próximos, o grupo contou com uma participação ilustre: Kai Hansen (Gamma Ray), que havia se interessado pelo som do conjunto e resolveu ajudá-los, o resultado são duetos memoráveis entre Kai e Hansi Kürsch. Assim como muitas outras bandas européias, a primeira experiência do Blind tocando fora do velho continente, foi no Japão, algo que serviu de inspiração para o álbum ao vivo Tokyo Tales, lançado em 1993. Mas antes de Tokyo Tales, veio Somewhere Far Beyond, de 1992, uma das obras-primas compostas pelo conjunto. Após este álbum o Blind Guardian se tornou presença contante nas listas de melhores bandas de metal do mundo, e começou a participar de festivais importantes por todo o mundo. Em 1998, com Hansi apenas nos vocais e Oliver Holzwarth no baixo é gravado Nightfall In Middle-Earth, inspirado na obra O Silmarillion de Tolkien. Em 2002, surge A Night At The Opera, que mudou um pouco o foco da banda, pois este álbum fala sobre a Guerra no Oriente Médio, mas também tem músicas sobre a Guerra de Tróia. Para 2003 uma surpresa, o single The Bard's Song - In The Forest, que traz uma nova versão de estúdio desta música, justicada por Hansi, que se dizia um pouco frustrado com a música que havia sido gravada anteriormente. Com o lançamento de A Twist In The Myth (2006), pode-se ver a banda com um estilo diferente, deixando um pouco de lado algumas influências do início de sua carreira. Embora criticada por alguns, essa mudança foi bem aceita pelo público e pela mídia especializada, considerada como uma renovação necessária.
Em 2010, é lançado mais um trabalho: At The Edge of Time! O álbum apresenta uma postura pesada e orquestrada. Conquistou ainda mais seus fiéis fãs, um trabalho feito com dedicação. Há uma passagem de orquestra logo no início da primeira música. Um álbum viciante e digno de atenção.
